660? I don't get it.

Hitting 660 home runs is a great accomplishment. Don't get me wrong. I understand that. But what was up with all that hoopla? I mean, Barry Bonds wasn't breaking any records. He was merely moving up to number 3 on the all time list past his Godfather, Willie Mays. Now that might be a fun thing for the Bonds clan, but really, why was it such a big deal? I just didn't understand it. And I'm not the only one

And here is gripe number two about that 660th homer. As Barry comes up to bat with two men on, the Giants commentator waxes, "If I'm Ned Yost (manager of the Milwaulkee Brewers) I pitch to him. Give your young pitcher the opportunity to gain some confidence." Ball 1 low and outside. Ball 2 low. Ball 3 low and outside. Foul ball high and outside. Splash. As Barry rounds the bases triumphantly, said announcer experiences dia of the mouth and says "Shoulda walked him." Huh? What? Idiot.

As a final note, I just have to say that as much as I can't stand Barry Bonds as a person, he is the greatest modern hitter in baseball. So good in fact, that he should be walked every time he comes to the plate. The fact that he isn't is merely a reflection of idiocy on the part of major league managers. If you want to win, you walk him and take your chances with whoever the Giants' no-name 5-hole hitter is.
